All Children Are Different

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid

During our academic lessons, it’s natural to notice that some students struggle more than others. Worksheets, tests, and classroom tasks tend to highlight a certain type of ability, and it’s easy to assume that these results define how a child is doing.

But our holiday programmes told a different story.

During hands-on activities like baking, laser tag, water play, and outdoor learning, some students who usually find academic tasks challenging showed remarkable focus, leadership, creativity, and confidence. In contrast, a few students who typically perform well academically needed more time to adapt outside the classroom setting.

These moments were quiet reminders that learning does not look the same for every child.

Academic performance is important, but it is only one part of a much bigger picture. Activities beyond the classroom allow children to reveal strengths that tests cannot measure, whether it’s problem-solving, teamwork, resilience, or creativity.

As educators, our role is not to label children by what they struggle with, but to recognise where they thrive and help them grow from there.
